For tax firms

About you

  • Last year's tax return (federal and state)
  • Government photo ID for you (and your spouse)
  • Social Security numbers or ITINs for everyone on the return
  • Bank routing and account number for direct deposit
  • IRS Identity Protection PIN, if you have one

Dependents

  • Names, dates of birth and Social Security numbers
  • Childcare costs, with each provider's name, address and tax ID
  • Form 1098-T and education expenses for students

Income

  • W-2 from each employer
  • 1099-NEC (contract/freelance work)
  • 1099-MISC (rents, royalties, other income)
  • 1099-K (payment apps, card processors, online marketplaces)
  • 1099-INT (interest)
  • 1099-DIV (dividends)
  • 1099-B (sales of stocks, funds or crypto)
  • 1099-R (pensions, IRAs, 401(k) distributions)
  • 1099-G (unemployment, state tax refunds)
  • 1099-SA (HSA distributions)
  • Schedule K-1 (partnerships, S corporations, trusts, estates)
  • Social Security benefit statement (SSA-1099)

Self-employment / business

  • Income records (sales, invoices, 1099s you received)
  • Expense records (receipts, statements)
  • Mileage log for business use of a vehicle
  • Home office measurements and costs

Deductions and credits

  • Form 1098 (mortgage interest) and property tax bills
  • Form 1098-E (student loan interest)
  • Form 1095-A (Marketplace health insurance)
  • Medical and dental expenses
  • Charitable donation receipts (cash and items)
  • HSA contribution records (Form 5498-SA, if issued)
  • Retirement contributions (IRA, SEP, solo 401(k))

Payments already made

  • Estimated tax payments, federal and state — dates and amounts
